Toulvaddie Distillery
The site of a proposed new Scotch whisky micro-distillery near Tain lies within a former WW2 airbase and was more recently used for the manufacture of telegraph poles. Although clearance works had previously been undertaken at the site, these had been poorly documented.
Following desktop assessment, EnviroCentre undertook hand-pitting, confirming the clearance works and subsequent upfilling with imported materials. Risk assessment satisfied Highland Council that the site is fit for its intended use, enabling construction of the distillery to go ahead. The building is designed to resemble those that once occupied the airbase and will make clever use of some of the historic infrastructure on the site. Whisky production is due to begin in 2018.
About The Distillery
Toulvaddie distillery, which will be located on the site of a former naval base at Fearn, near Tain, is the brainchild of film and TV production company co-owner Heather Nelson. The microdistillery, which is due to become operational by May 2017, will produce up to 30,000 litres of alcohol per year in two small copper pot stills.
Toulvaddie single malt will eventually be released as a light, ‘easy-drinking’ whisky in both peated and unpeated expressions.
