Sustainability and Resources Institute (SRI)

EnviroCentre is in the process of establishing an independent not-for-profit research body, the Sustainability and Resources Institute (SRI), specialising in resource accounting and the promotion of sustainable practices. This initiative is being supported through DOENI and Environment and Heritage Service funds as part of the Northern Visions project. SRI is designed to operate as a virtual centre created to act as a focal point for collaborative research which bridges science and policy in the field of resource management and sustainable development.

The Institute will seek to carry out interdisciplinary research which recognises the fundamental links between society, economic development and the natural world, which provides the resources upon which all economic activities depend. The Institute aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines to facilitate debate and cross fertilisation of ideas from academia, industry, government and advocacy organisations.

The research of the Institute will be focused on the following key themes:
  • Resource and sustainability modelling, including material flow analysis, ecological footprinting, carbon accounting and geographical information systems;
  • Development of decision support tools and techniques to facilitate and optimise decision making;
  • Industrial ecology and symbiosis and whole-systems analysis;
  • Natural resources and ecosystem goods and services management; and
  • Linking policy development and decision making across interdisciplinary boundaries
